En octubre de 1739, con la excusa del incumplimiento de los acuerdos comerciales obtenidos en América por el tratado de Utrech, Inglaterra declara la guerra a España y ello le da la excusa para intentar la conquista de las posesiones españolas en el Nuevo Mundo. Para ello, los británicos alistan tres escuadras con un importante contingente terrestre para asaltar los enclaves españoles americanos.

La Batalla de Cartagena de Indiasnarra el desarrollo secuencial y pormenorizado de los acontecimientos en los que se implicaron los diversos contendientes (españoles, colombianos , británicos, norteamericanos y franceses), desde el comienzos del siglo XVIII hasta la batalla principal en la ciudad de Cartagena de Indias durante 1741, así como muestra en toda su plenitud los fuertes caracteres del virrey de Nueva Granada, Sebastián de Eslava; el del tuerto, cojo y manco marino español Blas de Lezo, y el del vicealmirante inglés Edward Vernon, actores principales de los hechos.

En esta 2ª edición se ha incluido, además, algunas aclaraciones y opiniones acerca de las últimas publicaciones noveladas de los hechos.

Les versions C++11, C++14 et C++17 ont apporté au langage C++ plus que de nouvelles fonctionnalités : une nouvelle façon de programmer. Dès lors, une refonte complète du classique Programmer en langage C++ de Claude Delannoy s'imposait. C'est à cette tâche que s'est attelé l'auteur à l'occasion de cette 10e édition de l'ouvrage, en réécrivant les exemples de code et en préconisant de bonnes pratiques de programmation dans l'esprit de ce C++ moderne.
L'ouvrage ainsi remanié commence par une présentation détaillée de la syntaxe de base du langage (types de données, opérateurs, instruction de contrôle, fonctions, pointeurs natifs), s'appuyant dès que possible sur les structures de données de la bibliothèque standard (type string et type vector) et sur la déclaration automatique (C++11). Puis il expose les techniques de gestion dynamique basées sur les " pointeurs intelligents " introduits par C++11 et C++14.
L'auteur insiste ensuite tout particulièrement sur la bonne compréhension des concepts objets (classes et objets, surdéfinition des opérateurs, héritage simple ou multiple, fonctions virtuelles) et de la programmation générique à l'aide des " patrons ". Un chapitre est consacré à la " sémantique de déplacement " introduite par C++11. Chaque notion nouvelle et chaque fonction du langage est illustrée de programmes complets écrits en C++ moderne, dont le code source est fourni sur le site www.editions_eyrolles.com.
Un équivalent en C++03 est proposé quand nécessaire pour les lecteurs amenés à exploiter d'anciens programmes. Tout au long de l'ouvrage, des notes soulignent les différences majeures entre le C++ et Java, de manière à établir des passerelles entre les deux langages.
